Status: 17.12.2021 10:23 a.m.

At the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein in Kiel, around 200 blood donations are currently missing every week. In order to ensure supplies also during the holidays, the German Red Cross (DRK) also calls for blood donations.

As a spokeswoman for the DRK announced, continuous donations are particularly important on several consecutive public holidays, as the preparations made from donor blood can sometimes only be kept for a few days.

Blood donation appointments in SH

Special blood donation dates at Christmas

In addition to the regular appointments, the DRK offers special blood donation appointments on Christmas Day. In Südholstein blood can be donated on December 26th in Elmshorn, Babensee and Wakendorf. On January 2nd, blood donations are possible in Lütjensee and Seester – and in Kiel on December 26th in the dance school “Tanzen in Kiel” between 11 am and 2 pm.

UKSH: 200 donations are missing every week

At the Schleswig-Holstein University Medical Center in Kiel, fewer people donate blood than is needed for ongoing operations. According to the in-house blood donation center, around 200 donations are currently missing every week. At the moment, the shortage can be compensated for by a low inventory and other blood donation services, says Dr. Sven Ole Schuster, head of the UKSH blood donation center.

“However, it is becoming apparent that the donation situation is worsening more and more over the holidays and probably also due to the current Corona situation.” That is why he appeals “in principle to every citizen of Schleswig-Holstein to think again over the holidays whether donating blood might not be an idea.”

Schuster wants to take away the fear of donating blood, especially during the Corona period. In addition to access restrictions, the university hospital also introduced an appointment system in order to minimize contact with other donors in the blood donation center.
