Blood of the Vine, Volume 8: The Silky Widows

Résumé

Coming from a wealthy family of silk workers from Lyon, the flamboyant Alice de Mareuyls finds herself at the head of a Champagne property whose future seems uncertain.

By addressing the famous oenologist Benjamin Cooker, this woman of temperament intends to further establish her authority with a daughter-in-law whose commoner origins she despises. Poisonous or cajoling, ambitious or needy, these widows of the Champagne method observe each other, provoke each other and confront each other under the sparkling gaze of the young Virgile Lanssien, who has come to lend a hand in this delicate mission.

The two Bordeaux experts take up residence in the lands of Aÿ and try to create an exceptional cuvée compromised by bad weather conditions, hasty harvests and difficult blends. Will they be able to honor this vintage, in principle doomed to oblivion? The conflict between the two widows then takes an unprecedented turn when Benjamin Cooker, to his great surprise, becomes the object of a manipulation that could well tarnish his reputation.
