Should one read letters chronologically? Does a poet actually also write poetry when he writes letters? Do poets write honest letters or do they expect posthumous publication? Can you “understand” a person by reading his letters? Where is the secrecy of letters when you read letters in public? These are the first questions of the Speer-Reichelt-Westhoff trio of speech in preparation for the joint reading of the correspondence between Hermann Hesse and his sons Bruno and Heiner, published in December 2019, “With the confidence that we cannot get lost”, edited by Michael Limberg in collaboration with Silver and Simon Hesse. It will be interesting to see whether blood is thicker than water for the Hesse family too.
