William Omar Landrón Rivera, better known as Don Omar, spoke for the first time about the kidney cancer who was diagnosed in June 2024.

The 46-year-old artist, who is currently in the middle of his “Back to Reggaetón” tour, spoke with Lili Estefan, host of Univision’s “El Gordo y La Flaca,” and revealed the fear he felt at this moment in his life.
“This is one of the most unexpected surprises,” he said at first before giving more details about the malignant tumor found in his left kidney.
“The fear was not dying,” the artist confessed, “the fear was staying alive and sick,” he said for the entertainment program and is quoted as saying US Magazine.
What were the symptoms that Don Omar had?
“I started to feel weak, And I was at that moment in which I was feeling this weakness, it was nothing more than that I was going through a hemorrhage that was being reflected in my urine for two weeks,” the Puerto Rican revealed about the first signs that he kept silent because he believed he was dehydrated.
This led him to self-medicate and “everything really got worse” because after one of his performances he felt even weaker and urinated blood, so he then sought medical assistance.

Kidney cancer symptoms
Kidney cancer is also known as renal cell carcinoma (RCC)as described by the American Cancer Society.
“This cancer begins when cells in the kidney grow out of control and outnumber normal cells. This makes it difficult for the body to function the way it should,” the website adds, which also describes that There are different types of this cancer kidney but the most common is renal cell cancer.
Although it sometimes does not cause symptoms, when they do appear they include:
- Blood in the urine
- Fatigue
- Weightloss
- Fever
- Pain in the lumbar area or lower back
- A lump on one side or in the lower back

Tests to diagnose kidney cancer begin with a urinalysis, blood chemistry panel, complete blood count, chest X-ray, CT scan, MRI, ultrasound, and kidney biopsy, as indicated by the National Cancer Institute.
With the last study mentioned, the doctor assigns the degree of classification of kidney cancer ranging from 1 to 4.
In Don Omar’s case, the disease was in phase 1, but after a robotic operation the tumor was removed and he was left cancer-free. (E)
