Blood drive in Metz on July 9, 2021

The French Blood Establishment (EFS) has been increasing calls for donations since June 24, 2021. In fact, reserves are too low and the shelf life of blood products is limited.

In addition, platelets cannot be used beyond 7 days and red blood cells are unusable after 42 days. Thus, it takes a contribution of 10,000 blood donations each day to treat 1 million patients per year.

To bail out hospitals with blood, a blood collect takes place this friday July 9, 2021 to the Metz arena from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Who can donate blood?

To donate blood, it is necessary :

  • be of legal age and be between 18 and 70 years old;
  • be in good health and weigh at least 50 kg.
  • After 60 years, the donation is necessarily subject to the authorization of the doctor responsible for the collection.

There are, however, a number of contraindications linked to the situation of the person wishing to donate blood (state of health, family history, personal practices, stays abroad, sexual practices, etc.).

A eligibility test lets you know if you can donate blood after answering a few questions.

Regulations for donating blood if you have been tested for Covid-19

  • If you have been tested positive for Covid-19, must wait 28 days after symptoms start or 14 days after symptoms disappear before you can donate blood
  • If you are asymptomatique with a positive test, you must wait 14 days from the date of the test,
  • If you have been in close contact with a confirmed case of Covid-19, you should wait 14 days after the last contact unless the PCR test is negative,
  • You cannot go to a clinic if you have flu-like symptoms.

Note: You must respect a period of at least 8 weeks between 2 blood donations.

A woman can donate blood to the maximum 4 times a year, a man 6 times a year.
