Blood donation: two days to replenish stocks

This Monday, June 14, will be World Blood Donor Day. An event, which in Reunion will be celebrated by two big days of fundraising today and tomorrow in Saint-Denis. The EFS hopes that donors will be there because blood stocks are particularly low.

Between the Covid, dengue fever and public holidays in May, blood reserves are currently very low. This was already the case last year, at the same time. The health situation does not facilitate blood donations, on the contrary. Blood donation day, which takes place this Monday, is therefore timely. It will be celebrated with two “giant” collections at the Nordev in Saint-Denis, today, Sunday June 13, and tomorrow, Monday June 14.

One donation can save 3 lives

In Réunion, 18,000 people donate blood each year and save 10,000 lives. The French Blood Establishment, EFS, hopes to see new donors during this special operation. “We need 120 bags a day. Except that some donors can no longer over time, especially those who are over 70 years old or who are sick. On the island, we would need 4,000 new donors per year”, explains Doctor Idriss Delouane, director of the EFS in Reunion.

Because despite the drop in blood donations, consumption remains just as strong. Nathalie Grondin, the communications director of the EFS, adds: “A patient needs several bags. Let us take the example of the delivery hemorrhage, it is when a woman has a hemorrhage during childbirth, she will need 20 to 30 bags of blood”.

Who can donate?

In practice, anyone between the ages of 18 and 70 who weighs more than 50 kg can donate blood, even if you have had Covid19 or dengue. In the first case, you will have to wait 14 days after the last symptoms, in the second case, 28 days.

If in doubt about your eligibility for a blood donation, an EFS doctor can answer you: EFS Saint-Denis (0262 90 53 81), EFS Saint-Pierre (0262 25 48 01).
