With the departures on vacation, the summer is often a time of tension for the donation of blood. At the Maison du Don in Avignon, festival-goers who come to give make up for the lack of donors, but this year the number of pockets is at a critical level. In question, the lack of doctors in the area which does not allow the French Blood Establishment to ensure all collections.
Many canceled collections
Since the beginning of the year 113 collections were canceled in Vaucluse and in the month of June, sixteen collections were canceled.
The regulations, which require the presence of a doctor at a collection point, put the Vaucluse EFS in difficulty, which has been lacking doctors for several years.
The donation house, usually open six days a week, only welcomes donors for four days. This week, with the departure on vacation of some of the doctors, this number has been reduced to two.
This is a trend that has lasted for about three years. it started with doctors who have retired and who have had difficulty replacing and now we really feel this lack of doctors in the department
With all the cancellations, the blood supply has declined sharply. The Vaucluse, which was already not self-sufficient at the level of the blood bags collected and recovered from the French Establishment of Bouches du Rhône, saw its number of blood products halve.
“We provide 13 health establishments with blood, so we need 24,000 bags per year but in recent years we have collected more between 10 and 15,000, which is almost half of our needs”, explains Nicolas Dehnig.
As summer approaches, the French Blood Establishment therefore calls for action to collect them, and especially to platelet donation. The donation of platelets is less popular with holidaymakers, especially festival-goers who come to give in Avignon because it takes more time.
A trend that extends to other departments
The other departments of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region are also affected by these collection cancellations. On all 6 departments, 50 collections were canceled in the month of June alone.
The French Blood Establishment PACA currently has a reserve of 85,000 products and is below the critical level of 90,000 products (120,000 would be needed), a threshold from which to be alarmed.
But it is impossible for the EFS to organize more collections to fill this gap if there is no not a sufficient number of doctors.
These difficulties, very marked in the Vaucluse, therefore risk to increase and extend to all departments over the long term if the public establishment fails to recruit.
We are a bit of a precursor in Vaucluse, because we lack the attractiveness of recruiting doctors, but this situation is starting to spread. We realize that even departments which had a collection surplus and which supplied other regions are now struggling to meet their quotas.
How to give?
During the month of July 22 collections are programmed on the Vaucluse with the objective of collecting 1200 bags of blood. About the region Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur there will be some 173 with an objective of 9000 pockets.
Since the start of the epidemic, all collections are by appointment. You can register with a few clicks on the platform of the French Blood Establishment.
