Blood donation in the midst of Covid

Since the start of deconfinement, the number of blood donations has decreased. In question, two major factors, the decrease in mobile collections on the one hand but above all the lack of information in this period of health crisis. Many of you wonder if you can get vaccinated and donate blood, or even if you can donate blood after declaring Covid19.

Clément comes here to the French blood establishment in Lille at least once a month. “It’s important to eventually be able to give a little bit of yourself to be able to help people who might need it, now is the time to go.”

During the confinement, the French were rather generous, but since the deconfinement blood donations have become rarer. Yet here the schedule is almost full for the whole week. “The problem stems from the fact that the collections were a little abused, deleted at times, and also many of our groups at home which were canceled, such as high schools which were not allowed to come to see us because of the barrier gestures. All this has created a big gap this year ”.

Less mobile collection and a lot of questions, with the health crisis some people think they will not be able to donate blood after having been vaccinated or having contracted the virus. “There is no delay between the vaccine and the blood donation, whereas when we have been sick with Covid, we put a safety period of about two weeks after the end of the symptoms, even if we know very well that the Covid virus is not in the blood, but it is a respiratory virus ”.

To compensate for the losses, the establishment can even push back its closing hours from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. to accommodate as many donors as possible.
