Blood donation: decreasing reserves | Weekly 39

The recruitment of new donors is essential.

Thanks to the 79,267 donors in our region mobilized throughout the year 2020, the EFS Burgundy-Franche-Comté has met the needs of all patients.
“If we can be proud of having, despite the pandemic, succeeded in ensuring the care of all patients awaiting transfusion, we nevertheless regret the deficit of new donors, with nearly a quarter of fewer recruitments compared to 2019. We must make ALL citizens aware of the importance of donating blood from the start of the year. Come donate your blood, it’s a united way of getting some fresh air and saving lives ” explains Doctor Mohamed Slimane, deputy director of EFS Bourgogne Franche-Comté.

Why is the recruitment of new donors so important when the EFS managed to meet all the needs of patients in 2020?
“Recruiting new donors is essential for three reasons:
First, renew the donors. Every year, 170,000 people leave the donor contingent by age limit or medical contraindications.
However, for 1 departure, 1.5 new ones must be recruited in order to obtain an equivalent number of donations, the old donors giving more often than the new ones.
We must also respond appropriately to each need. With 500,000 transfused in France per year, the recruitment of various profiles brings diversity in blood groups and phenotypes essential to cover the needs of the entire population despite its genetic differences.
Finally, we must ensure, whatever the context, the immediate needs.
The health crisis that affects us is a good example. A large number of patients with Covid-19 are all donors temporarily excluded from donation, since it is necessary to wait 28 days after the cessation of symptoms to be able to donate blood.
We must therefore count on new donors to ensure the 10,000 donations needed every day in France.

Doctor Mohamed Slimane, deputy director of EFS Bourgogne Franche-Comté.

What is the state of blood reserves at the start of the year?
“The weakening of the mobilization after the end of year celebrations and the two public holidays, which did not allow the EFS to collect, begins to have a negative impact on blood reserves. We tried to compensate for public holidays by extending the hours on Saturdays December 26 and January 2, but this measure did not have the expected effects on mobilization. The period is difficult: stocks are falling and we have fears for the weeks to come without renewed mobilization. We still have difficulties in organizing collections in companies because of teleworking as well as in the student environment; when they are maintained, attendance is reduced compared to our usual standards. In 2020, we had a 64% drop in student fundraising donations and nearly half as many corporate donations as a result of the pandemic. Finally, if during the first half of 2020 hospital activity was slowed down by the pandemic, reducing the demand for blood, the latter has resumed since the start of the September. The consumption of blood products is therefore on the rise again without our blood collection level being comparable to that before the health crisis, where we collect a lot in high schools, campuses and businesses.
At a time when health is at the heart of concerns, donating blood is a simple and beautiful way to help save lives. Don’t wait any longer, make an appointment now! ».
