The blood donation campaign held in recent weeks in Almendralejo has ended with a total of 724 bags. This is a lower figure than expected, since the collection that is traditionally held coinciding with the summer in the capital of Tierra de Barros is one that manages to attract a greater number of donors, above those that take place in April and December. Thus, the start of the campaign seemed to be promising with the first few days in which the facilities were closed exceeding one hundred bags a day, a figure that subsequently fell, especially during the second week.
Although it is not known what the reasons for this decrease in the number of blood bags obtained on this occasion may have been, it should be noted that this summer’s campaign was marked by a relevant novelty. After a significant number of years carrying out these extractions at the San Roque health centre, citizens were called to donate at the facilities of the San José centre, a decision that was not liked by all residents and that corresponded to “higher authorities”, according to what the spokesman in Almendralejo of the Badajoz blood donors’ brotherhood, Antonio Mulas, stated on public radio, who respected the decision, but did not share it.
In any case, the bags collected will help alleviate the blood shortage that sometimes occurs in Extremadura hospitals, and can be used in various emergency situations and in the normal functioning of health centres, such as operations, transplants or interventions for traffic accidents, among others.
