With a blood donation, you can save 3 lives, but unfortunately stocks are regularly at their lowest. Only 3.6% of French people donate blood, we talk about it with Dr Pascale Lambert – regional head of blood sampling at the French Blood Establishment of Occitanie.
The French Blood Establishment has the main mission of supplying our country with blood products, with the help of donors. The need for donations is constant and 1 million patients are treated each year thanks to voluntary donations. A blood donation can save 3 lives because it allows us to collect: blood but also platelets and plasma.
Dr Pascale Lambert, regional head of sampling at the French Blood Establishment of Occitanie, comes to make us aware of the needs and explains to us how everything works.
Blood donation: it allows all blood components to be collected at the same time and in just 10 minutes. It meets the most common transfusion needs, whether regular such as for patients suffering from cancer, or occasional such as hemorrhages during childbirth…
Plasma donation: it lasts on average 45 minutes. Your plasma is mainly used for the regular care of 500,000 patients per year in France, treated using drugs derived from plasma: hemophiliacs, immunocompromised people, people suffering from serious chronic illnesses, etc.
Platelet donation: it lasts on average 90 minutes. The platelets will only be kept for 7 days. They are generally used to treat blood diseases but also save the lives of patients suffering from sudden and severe hemorrhage.
