Blood! Bitter Olympic exit for German-born shooting star in dressage –

The 17th rider in the Grand Prix, Marcus Orlob and Jane, were unable to complete the test. Chief judge Susanne Baarup called off the US combination. She had discovered blood on the Dutch mare.

After half of the task, the Grand Prix at the 2024 Olympics was over – the rule that no blood may be seen on a horse in dressage came into effect for Marcus Orlob. A blood stain the size of a thumbnail was visible on the right back of his mare’s white fetlock. The blood was coming out on the inside in the upper area of the fetlock.

One hour after the bell rang, the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) explained the incident. It is assumed that the mare sustained a cut shortly before or during entry into the Olympic Stadium. This fresh wound then began to bleed during the Grand Prix at the 2024 Olympic Games.

What does the blood mean for Marcus Orlob?

Because of the blood, Jane has been eliminated, meaning the combination tournament at the 2024 Olympics has ended earlier than expected. The American team can now theoretically still qualify for the team competition, which means that the addition of their two scores should result in at least the tenth highest total. This team decision will be made in the Grand Prix Special next Saturday. The best ten teams in the Grand Prix, which ends tomorrow, Wednesday, July 30, at 3:20 p.m. with Jessica von Bredow-Werndl’s ride, will qualify for the team final at the 2024 Olympics. The Grand Prix will also decide on participation in the freestyle. This is where the individual gold medal is at stake. The freestyle will take place on Sunday, August 4, from 10 a.m.

Who is Marcus Orlob?

Marcus Orlob comes from North Rhine-Westphalia. As a teenager, he occasionally had riding lessons from Hubertus Schmidt. His main instructor was Johan Zagers. He also completed his training as a rider there. Since mid-2015, Orlob has been riding for the USA, where he now runs a training business in Loxahatchee, Florida.

The 42-year-old has not been riding the Dutch mare Jane for very long. Her owner, Alice Tarjan, 2023 World Cup finalist, rode Jane herself in Wellington in January 2024. From March, Orlob sat in the saddle of the Desperado daughter for the first time at tournaments.

As a young horse, Jane was the champion mare in the Netherlands. The pair was the surprise of the season. It was only at the tournament at the Schafhof that the pair were able to draw attention to themselves. After the CHIO Aachen, Orlob and Jane were nominated for the 2024 Olympics.
