Blood banks will test blood for coronavirus

“We are going to see how many people have had corona, so that scientists can see how the virus spreads and how it is with group immunity”, art microbiologist Hans Zaaijer of Sanquin explains to RTL Nieuws.

About 2,000 blood donors arrive at the blood bank every day. According to Zaaijer, this is a good representation of people aged 18 to 79 throughout the country.

Anonymous

It is a scientific research that is done on the basis of anonymity. “The researchers will therefore not be shown the names of the donors. Nor will we inform our donors whether we have found antibodies in their blood,” says Zaaijer.

“We understand that a lot of people would like to know about this, including our donors. But this is a scientific study that is intended to investigate the spread and how group immunity is progressing.”

According to the professor, anonymity is part of such a study.

Start quickly

The blood bank expects to start testing within a few weeks. “We have a large archive and can therefore look back. And so we will also see when the virus first appeared in our donors and how it spread.”
