Regardless of whether Wonder Woman smashes terrorists against walls, Steppenwolf Amazons is hacked with his ax or Flash is shot: In “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” violence has bloody consequences – and that is exactly what was important to the director.
“Zack Snyder’s Justice League” is not only two hours longer than the theatrical version and contains numerous scenes that did not exist in “Justice League” from 2017. The so-called Snyder Cut is also much more brutal in many action scenes that are very similar or exactly the same as in the theatrical version.
On the one hand, this is due to the darker colors and the less cheerful background music. On the other hand, it also has to do with the fact that there are additional blood effects and the like in “Zack Synder’s Justice League” that were not shown in the theatrical version.
A good example of all of these factors is the introduction of Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), the scene in which she defeats the terrorists who want to blow up the courthouse. In the following video we have put the scenes from the two “Justice League” versions side by side:
Due to the bloody violence (and the repeated use of the word “fuck”) “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” received the so-called R-Rating in the USA, so to speak the equivalent of our FSK approval from 18 years of age.
But why did director Zack Snyder choose this increased level of violence? In conversation with the US industry magazine Variety he and his wife, Deborah Snyder, who is a producer on the film, said the team enjoyed not having to think about a release. Finally, Studio Warner, which had “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” produced explicitly for the US streaming service HBO Max, agreed to a higher rating.
“We did it as if there were no release authorities. As we found it coolest, ”that was the philosophy.
Where wood is chopped, splinters must fall
At the same time, however, Snyder wanted the depiction of violence to be realistic – or at least as realistic as it can be in a film in which gods and humans fight with each other:
“I always think consequences are important, I think a real threat is important,” says Snyder.
For Deborah Snyder, the trivializing depiction of violence in superhero films with youth approval is even “a little irresponsible”, as she explained in the conversation, because no effects of violence are shown. And then Zack Snyder agreed:
“When the superhero smashes the car and the whole car explodes and you see the driver crawling out of the wreck and you realize it’s a youth rated movie, then it’s just a formality that you don’t see any blood. I want a real representation of violence. I don’t want to play it down.“
“Zack Snyder’s Justice League” can be seen in Germany since March 18, 2021 on Sky and Sky Ticket. The release on VoD and on DVD and Blu-ray will follow at the end of May.
