The Netherlands will support European sanctions against Russia, Foreign Minister Stef Blok reports on Wednesday Twitter. According to the minister, Russian involvement is the only possible explanation for the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
“The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) also confirms that novichok has been used in the poisoning of Navalny. No matter when or where, the use of chemical weapons is unacceptable. We share the conclusion of Germany and France that there is there is no other possible explanation for the poisoning of Navalny than Russian involvement and responsibility, “Blok writes on Twitter.
Germany and France announced on Wednesday afternoon that they would come up with sanctions against Russians who would be involved in the poisoning. The countries decided to do this after no explanation from Moscow. According to Blok, the Netherlands will support the call for sanctions at the next meeting of the European Union.
Navalny became unwell on a domestic flight in Russia in August. He was allowed to go to Germany for treatment and spent weeks in the Berlin Charité hospital. Investigators determined that he had been poisoned with novichok. Navalny is now on the mend.
Western countries are demanding clarification from Moscow, but President Vladimir Putin’s regime denies any involvement. Blok said he was in favor of sanctions if it became clear who was behind the poisoning.
