Bloedserieus: Gynecologist Comfort Achuo Answers Questions About Menstrual Health and Period Pain

TVIs taking the pill bad and why? Can something go wrong with a menstrual cup? And why do you have pain in your lower back during your period? These questions are answered by gynecologist Comfort Achuo, known from ‘De Mol’, in the VRT MAX series ‘Bloedserieus’. In the four-part series we also closely follow the periods of Coely, Lynn Van den Broeck, Elodie Gabias and Steffi Mercie for a month.

“The first time I had my rules, I was twelve years old. I remember it very well. I looked in my underwear and saw traces of blood. I thought: ‘Oops, what’s happening here?’” Coely recalls. “I told my mom and then she realized: wow, you’re becoming a woman.” The singer suffers a lot from cramps during her period. “I have a heavy flow and I suffer from migraines. I’m always in pain. It has reached such an advanced stage that I am at home sick,” she admits. The week before she gets her rules, she also notices a major impact on her state of mind. “I always get super emotional and everything irritates me. I hate the world. Sometimes I am happy and other times I am unhappy.”

‘Thuis’ actress Lynn Van den Broeck also recognizes this. “It has such a big impact on my mood and my energy level.” And her friend Mathias Vergels also notices this: “She is even more sensitive.” Lynn has chosen to follow her natural cycle for a few months now. “I was tired of having hormones in my body. I wanted to get back to my natural rhythm,” she explains. This mainly means that her body has a life of its own and that she gets her rules when she least expects them… “I had nothing with me, so it was doable with a little toilet paper. That really sucks.”

Sometimes in awkward situations and sometimes confined to bed in pain, Coely, Lynn Van den Broeck, Elodie Gabias and Steffi Mercie testify 100 percent honestly about their cycle. ‘Bloody serious’ is worth watching VRT MAX.
