Blocked access to Facebook in Burma

The Burmese Army blocked access to Facebook and other Internet services in recent days, all because of the increase in social unrest.

Criticism and mobilization against the military coup that removed the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi from power is increasing.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications, now controlled by the military, asked “all mobile phone and Internet operators” to block Facebook and other sites.

With a population of 54 million, there are an estimated 22 million Facebook users in Burma, which these days are serving to give a voice to deposed politicians and promote a civil disobedience movement against the coup.

Authorities were urged from Facebook “to restore connectivity so that people in Burma can communicate with family and friends, and access important information.”

This social network, in addition to Twitter, in 2019 canceled the accounts of the army chief, Min Aung Hlaing, who carried out the coup last Monday and who has held the maximum power in the country since then.
