Blizzard employee calls the biggest WoW streamer “Ars ** hole”

Twitch streamer Asmongold is insulted by a Blizzard employee on Twitter. He takes it very calmly.

Conflicts and quick, careless statements are more common on Twitter. Now even the WoW streamer Asmongold was insulted by a Blizzard employee – and quite drastically. That’s why it’s making the rounds in the community.

Who is Asmongold? The streamer Asmongold is well known, albeit controversial, in the World of Warcraft community. What is clear, however, is that he is the biggest content creator for World of Warcraft, reaching hundreds of thousands with his videos on Twitch and YouTube. For many years he has played WoW almost exclusively, and is currently also testing a few other games – such as Final Fantasy XIV.

What happened? Asmongold has been playing Final Fantasy XIV for a few days and some MMORPG players don’t like it. They fear that, with Asmongold, its partly toxic community will also find its way into the game. You want to protect the game from that. On Twitter, therefore, “XylariaVG” called for the “hatred and boorishness not to be welcomed in Final Fantasy XIV”.

There was unexpected encouragement from Adam Holisky. He is Lead Product Manager at Blizzard and in response to Xylaria said:

The guy [Asmongold] is an asshole.

Even if Holisky’s Twitter account is his private account and includes the comment that “the views are his own”, this does not throw a good light on Blizzard.

The tweet has since been deleted, but of course it can still be found on the internet.

This is how Asmongold reacts: The Twitch streamer takes this insult quite easily. He explained:

People link me to pictures of a Blizz employee who talks badly about me.

I don’t care, I also talk badly about them all the time, lol

I’m a big boy, I can handle it, I don’t need anyone to molest them to defend my honor.

Some Asmongold community members had apparently made it their business to harass Holisky and also to draw attention to it in the WoW subreddit and the official forums.

Why did the Blizzard employee say that? Why Holisky wrote the very drastic words is not entirely clear. However, there are also some people at Blizzard who are critical of Asmongold. After all, the streamer polarizes and also often chooses harsh words in which developers’ competence is denied or generalized in a rather unobjective manner. That should be a thorn in the side of some.

What do you think of the Blizzard employee’s reaction? Absolutely unprofessional or are such statements okay as a private person on Twitter?

  1. Personally, I think it’s pretty unprofessional. I mean, Xylaria was calling for people to harass Asmond and mass report him during his playthrough. Regardless of how you feel about him, that is pretty uncool. While Holisky’s twitter profile is his own and he can do with it what he will, he is listed in it as a blizzard employee. It’s not that far of a stretch for people to equate his own personal feelings with that of his company. At the very least, if I ever called a customer that while I was also advertising somehow that I work for my place of business. I can almost guarantee I would not be working there anymore.

I also want to say I appreciate this article. I don’t see a lot of them these days, especially about this sort of content, that feels like it stays unbiased and on point quite like this.

  2. The gamers who worship Asmongold are sheep–if he told them all to jump off a bridge, they’d do it. If he says or implies that someone should be harassed, they’ll do it. And -have- done it.

A lot of gamers are unfortunately mentally unstable and have serious anger/entitlement issues, which they take out on other gamers (“swatting”, etc), as well as game company employees whom they feel aren’t catering to them enough. Employees receive death threats simply because it’s felt that they’re not writing or programming a game well.

There is never any excuse for sending death threats to someone and trying to have their child taken away from them simply because you need a scapegoat for your anger over a video game, or because they insulted your sacred cow.
