A couple of hours ago, there was a developer stream from Blizzard that discussed seasons and the overall monetization of Diablo 4.
The first season will launch a few weeks after the official release of the game. After that, the seasons will appear quarterly and offer a unique – for each season – storyline, but not connected to the main storyline of the game (the expansion of the main storyline will be reserved for additions).
In addition, the seasons will feature “fresh gameplay” with new challenges, bosses, legendary items, transmogs, and more. You will also receive something similar to the Seasonal Diaries from Diablo 3. Completing certain actions (such as clearing X dungeons) will reward you with gifts.
Blizzard also promises that with each season there will be fixes and gameplay improvements in line with fan feedback.
There will be no stairs in seasons one and two, only after that – in accordance with fan feedback – such a feature will appear in D4.
As for monetization… As you know, Diablo 4 is a Buy-To-Play game. But in addition to that, you will also get a limited-time offer item shop + Seasonal Battle Pass.
Battle Pass is divided into free and paid (for $10). On the free one, you can get 27 rewards, and on the paid one, you can get three times more. However, the rewards in BP will be purely cosmetic (outfits, weapon skins, emotes, mounts, etc.) and will not affect gameplay balance in any way. That is, there was no Pay-To-Win and never will be.
In addition, while leveling up in the BP, you can get the so-called “Season Blessings”, which will minimally speed up your progress (for example, X percent to exp, more gold from merchants).
