Markus Persson => Sold Majong/Minecraft to MS, so yes for the money.
Ed Boon => Didn’t own a computer game company, worked for a company that was in it for the money but wasn’t really good at it and went bankrupt, meanwhile it’s WarnerBros where he works and that’s not exactly a charity…
Sid Meier => Co-founder of MicroProse, which went nuts in 1993… And was sold. Firaxis Games (co-founder) has been sold to Take-Two Interactive, so yes for the money.
John Romero => Co-founder of id Software, kicked out of Id Software because his creative vision and reality did not match. Then Ion Storm (Daikatana “one of the worst video games of all time”), sold to Eidos Interactive and eventually closed its doors… Now under Romero Games, check out the games they’ve made… Well. ..
So yes, the companies (and the owners) do it for the money and if they don’t, they generally fail. Sometimes you can make a profitable vision full game due to beautiful, unique circumstances. Sometimes it is just luck that afterwards people call it a ‘vision full game’. And sometimes you used to have a good idea and that’s it… *cough* Romero *cough*
In addition, you cannot really compare now and 30-40 years ago. Is the Civilization of then still the Civilization of today? Is that Mortal Kombat? Is that Doom? What great things did Markus Persson produce after Minecraft, a title he hasn’t bothered with for 10+ years… Is Minecraft from then the Minecraft of today (no idea!)?
