Blinken: US supports Ukraine’s NATO membership

Anthony Blinken spoke to US senators

The head of the State Department acknowledged that, however, not all members of the Alliance are ready to vote to provide Kiev with an action plan for accession.

Ukraine has all the necessary tools to join NATO, but not all NATO members are ready to vote to provide it with an action plan, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said during performances at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on Tuesday 8 June.

“We support Ukraine’s membership in NATO. It currently has all the tools it needs to join the Alliance,” said the head of the State Department.

However, according to him, not all members of the organization are ready to vote to provide Kiev with an action plan for gaining membership.

“The very plan of action for gaining membership should be developed with full consensus of all NATO member states. I believe that some states support this to a lesser extent than others,” Blinken admitted.

Earlier, NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Joana also said that there is no consensus in the Alliance according to the action plan for Ukraine and for upcoming summitscheduled for June 14, no decision will be made on it.

At the same time, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky urged to immediately resolve the issue about Ukraine’s accession to NATO, since the country’s independence is at stake.
