US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on Monday, July 19, met with the leader of the Belarusian opposition, ex-presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya. The meeting took place in Washington. About it reported in the oppositionist’s Telegram channel.
The meeting was also attended by Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and US State Department adviser Derek Scholle.
The politicians “discussed the hijacking of the Ryanair plane, attacks on civil society and the media organized by the regime, illegal migration to Lithuania as an attempt to take revenge on the EU.”
Tikhanovskaya called on the US authorities to accept an emergency package for the Belarusian independent media, to expand assistance to repressed, political prisoners and their families.
She also advocated an increase in the number of scholarship programs to support students and researchers.
The Belarusian oppositionist asked to inform the Kremlin that the signed contracts and agreements with Alyaksandr Lukashenka will not be recognized legally and will be annulled.
Tikhanovskaya also called on the White House to increase political and economic pressure on Lukashenka.
