Blinken joined Cihanoouska’s talks with Victoria Newland, the third-highest official in the State Department, who is known as a staunch Moscow critic, showing support to the opposition leader the day before her White House talks.

“I thank him for his support of Belarus’s democratic efforts,” Cihanouska wrote on Twitter after a meeting on social media.

“I called [ASV] to strengthen assistance to our civil society, to put economic and political pressure on the regime and to urge Russia to play a constructive role in resolving the crisis, “said the opposition leader.

“The world is inspired by the people of Belarus, including Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlan Cihanouska, who, in the face of brutal repression in their country, continues to boldly demand that their position be taken into account,” a U.S. official said in a statement last week.

Cihanouska was forced to flee to Lithuania after the August 9 presidential election, for which Lukashenko was declared the winner. However, the opposition accuses the regime of widespread falsification of election results and demands the resignation of Lukashenko. The opposition considers Cihanouska to be the real winner of the election.

After the elections in Belarus, protests began against the Lukashenko regime, which turned out to be an unprecedented mass movement.
