Blinken noted that he could not say how long the war would last, but insisted that Ukraine’s defeat was not inevitable.

He acknowledged that “the weight of the Russian army, if it puts all its strength into it, far exceeds what Ukraine is capable of mustering,” but noted the determination of the Ukrainian people, which indicates that Moscow will not be able to bend it to its will.

“If Moscow is going to somehow try to overthrow the government and install its own puppet regime, 45 million Ukrainians will reject it one way or another,” Blinken said.

The Secretary of State reiterated that the US and other allies are concerned about the risk of an escalation in the conflict. “Worse than a war that is limited to Ukraine, there can only be a war that will escalate even more and go beyond its borders,” Blinken said.
