The US official asked President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to increase security for journalists in Mexico, due to the “worrying” murders and continuous threats that have been registered in the first two months of 2022.

This month, Senators Marco Rubio and Tim Kaine had written to Blinken to express their concern about the murders of journalists in the neighboring country and denounce the “inaction” of the Mexican government.

The senators, Republican and Democrat, defended that the United States should urge the Executive of Andrés Manuel López Obrador to improve the protection of journalists and lamented that the Mexican President “continues to criticize journalists who criticize his Government instead of defending freedom of expression.” expression”.

The murders of journalists, which now total six so far in 2022, have shocked the country and united the union in demanding justice and protection for communicators in Mexico, one of the most dangerous nations to practice this profession.

From the year 2000 to date, the Article 19 organization has documented 150 murders of journalists in Mexico, possibly related to their work. Of the total, 138 are men and 12 are women. Of these, 47 were registered during the previous term of President Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018) and 30 in the current one of López Obrador (2018-2024).
