For eighteen years,a groundbreaking program has been empowering blind and visually impaired individuals to experience the thrill of driving. Participants, guided by experienced instructors, navigate renowned European race tracks, reaching speeds of up to 100 mph. This isn’t just about speed; it’s about independence, confidence, and breaking down barriers.
Recently,at the prestigious paul Ricard Circuit in Castellet,France,two participants,75-year-old Monique and 29-year-old Benjamin,demonstrated the program’s remarkable impact. Monique, entirely blind, and Benjamin, with a progressive visual impairment, both took the wheel, showcasing their skill and determination.
“I had never driven before joining the association in 2013,” specifies Monique, a retiree. “Driving gives me great sensations; it’s an activity that has become accessible to us who are blind.It’s distracting.”
Driver and Instructor: A Partnership of Skill and Trust
monique, behind the wheel of a clio, smoothly exited the pit lane under the precise guidance of her co-driver, Yanic Girault. With intense focus, she shifted gears, navigated the first chicane, and accelerated. Girault’s calm instructions, using a clock-based system, directed Monique’s turns and speed: “Right 10, right 5, left 5, axis, we pass 4th, gas!”
For Benjamin, a behavioral neuroscience researcher, the experience is relatively new. He has pigmentary retinitis, a degenerative disease causing progressive vision loss.”I have a visual impairment, pigmentary retina,” he explains. “It is a degenerative disease,the loss of vision is progressive. Currently, I am at 0.5 visual out of 10. I have never been able to drive until a year ago,when I joined the association here on the Castellet circuit.I have always loved thrills, and this was the perfect combo.I drive the Clio with a manual gearbox. Once my driving skills allow it, I could move on to the Mégane RS 275 and move up.This also allows us to interact with people in our daily lives. We know what we’re talking about, driving, automobile, and this provides a new subject for conversation and sharing.”
