The U.S. Senate has overwhelmingly confirmed that the senior diplomat Antony Blinken will serve as Secretary of State. His top priority after he takes office will be to repair America’s leadership in the world, repair cooperation with allies, and reverse the Trump era’s “America First” Foreign policy, judging from his speech at the Senate appointment hearing, the United States will continue its commitment to Taiwan and support the Trump era’s tough stance on China.
The U.S. Senate voted 78 in favor to 22 against on Tuesday (26th), and approved Blincol, the secretary of state nominated by President Biden, to succeed Michael Pompeo as the State Department. The 58-year-old veteran diplomat is a long-time confidant of Biden. He was an important official during Obama’s administration and is well versed in geopolitics.
Biden’s policy toward China has attracted much attention after he took office. In the previous appointment hearing, many Republicans worried that Brinken would return to the diplomatic line of the Obama era. In this regard, Brinken said that he supports the Trump administration’s tough stance on China, although it is not all right, and does not agree with the “America First” strategy; in the face of China’s technological and economic competition, the United States should think How to enhance your competitiveness.
Brinken also stated in the hearing that the Biden administration will continue its commitment to Taiwan to ensure that Taiwan is capable of self-defense, and hopes that Taiwan will play a greater role in the international arena. “Taiwan is a model of democracy and a strong economy in many aspects. And high-tech towns, there are many things we can learn from in responding to the epidemic.”
Regarding Pompeo’s abolition of the “Guidelines for Exchanges with Taiwan” restrictions before his resignation, Brinken did not directly respond to whether it would continue, saying that he would study it carefully.
The Biden administration has promised to return Iran to the nuclear agreement and lift sanctions on Iran. In 2018, the Trump administration withdrew from the Iran nuclear agreement and imposed a series of sanctions on the Tehran authorities to prevent Iran from obtaining the economic benefits promised by the agreement. Iran countered by reducing the implementation of its nuclear agreement commitments.
The cabinet personnel cases nominated by Biden have successively passed the Senate, including Treasury Secretary Ye Lun. Yellen also stated in the hearing that he would deal with China’s unfair and illegal trade practices, and would “use all tools” to deal with China’s behavior, echoing Blincol’s speech on China’s policy, and continuing former Treasury Secretary May Nuchin ( Steven Mnuchin) takes a hard line on China.
Brinken is expected to take office after taking the oath on Wednesday, and will work closely with White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan in the future.
