/ world today news/ “Excavators and explosions for several million pass through one of the greatest contemporary Bulgarian sculptors, Valentin Starchev, as well as through the image of copyright, through the voice of the majority of Bulgarian sculptors, artists, architects, who think differently people.”
This is what the great Bulgarian sculptor Prof. Emil Popov wrote in an open letter addressed to the President, the Prime Minister, the Minister of Culture and the Mayor of Sofia, on the occasion of the decision to demolish the “1300 Years of Bulgaria” monument.
On December 18, the Metropolitan Municipal Council adopted a decision to dismantle the “1300 Years of Bulgaria” monument from the space in front of the National Palace of Culture. 42 municipal councilors voted “for” and only 3 were “against”.
The monument was built during the celebrations more than 30 years ago in connection with 1300 years since the establishment of the Bulgarian state. The author of the monument is professor Valentin Starchev. The compositional figures are 7 meters high, and the entire monument is 35 meters tall. After the changes of 1989, it was left without maintenance and began to crumble.
“In front of the eyes of the Bulgarian students and the Bulgarian society, which is told that there is not enough money for education, health care and so on,” writes Emil Popov in his letter. “With an argument about the soldier’s monument, which undoubtedly needs to be restored, for which there is a decision from several years ago, without doing this absurd destruction of the monument. With an argument that people do not like it (the ruin that it is now) after internet survey.
They divided us again into THEM and the People (understand the people 7+2 million).
With indignation and pain I say again, we are part of this nation and we serve it as well as they (40s +…).
Public property should be understood as the property of the society – or the people. What was done by the Bulgarian state (1300 years old) by Bulgarian artists with the funds of the Bulgarian people cannot be turned into a political game. Because there is no way to build spiritual values, an image of our national self-confidence and self-respect.
40 municipal councilors (with what professional qualification on the problem?) against the monument “1300 years of Bulgaria”.
We want to hear your voice! Please!
What are we bequeathing to Bulgaria 1333 years later?” Prof. Emil Popov ends his letter with this question.
Meanwhile, because of the monument “1300 years of Bulgaria”, Prof. Desislava Mincheva, a member of the IB and the Board of the SBH, resigned. She announced this herself in a letter to the mayor Yordanka Fandakova and to Ivaylo Znepolski, chairman of the Creative Council.
“Disappointed and truly disgusted by the decision of the municipality to dismantle the monument “1300 years of Bulgaria” I am leaving the Creative Council! Nothing gives me hope to think that I can do something meaningful for our culture after such an act of disrespecting the opinion of the creative organizations , as well as many others outside of them. I think it is a manifestation of the highest form of hypocrisy to annually support cultural projects unproven in time, and at the same time to tear down with a light hand a symbol of our historical identification, with plastic merits appreciated by the European community and beyond, created by one of our biggest names in sculpture! I have no desire to participate (albeit indirectly) in political decisions that endanger the morals – mine and of many other than me,” Mincheva declares.
