Blasphemy, Buffon disqualified: skip the derby

Sanctioned with a fine, the Juventus goalkeeper had been deferred: the appeal of the federal prosecutor accepted, one day stop

In the days when we talk about his long-term future, in the meantime the immediate future of Gigi Buffon is decided by sports justice. The Federal Court of Appeal presided over by Mario Luigi Torsello upheld the appeal of the Federal Prosecutor, inflicting a day of disqualification on Gianluigi Buffon.

The Juventus goalkeeper, sanctioned by the National Federal Court with a fine of 5,000 euros, had been deferred for having uttered a sentence containing a blasphemous expression during the match against Parma last December 19. Buffon will thus miss the derby with Torino scheduled for Saturday 3 April at 6 pm.

History

The blasphemous expression was not caught on the spot by the referee team: hence the lack of provision by the sports judge. A subsequent investigation by the Federal Prosecutor’s Office however led Buffon to be referred “for having, during the Parma-Juventus match, about 80 minutes into the game, addressing his teammate Manolo Portanova, pronounced a sentence containing a blasphemous expression” . The Federal Court had decided: fine of 5,000 euros, no disqualification. But the Prosecutor’s Office filed an appeal, now accepted by the Federal Court of Appeal with a disqualification for one turn.
