Return to the Los Angeles of the future in the Japanese-produced anime series “Blade Runner: Black Lotus” this fall.
During this year’s home Comic-Con @ Home, we were told that there will be an animated TV series called “Blade Runner: Black Lotus”, which takes place sometime between the original and “Blade Runner 2049”.
The series is about a new replicant named Elle (voiced by Jessica Henwick), who was created for an unknown reason. In the first trailer, we see that she seems to have some role in how the world changes between Tyrell Corporation and Wallace Corporation ruling.
Some episodes of the TV series are directed by Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama, who made the anime series “Appleseed” and “Ghost in the Shell” respectively. Since Los Angeles in “Blade Runner” is very much inspired by Japanese cities, it feels quite fitting that there will be an anime series.
“Blade Runner: Black Lotus” gets 13 episodes and premieres on Adult Swim with English voices (probably HBO Nordic here in Sweden) and in Japanese on the streaming service Crunchyroll sometime this fall. In my opinion, the series seems to have potential, although I doubt the 3D animated style.
Some of the English voices come from Will Yun Lee, Samira Wiley, Brian Cox, Wes Bentley, Josh Duhamel, Peyton List, Stephen Root, Barkhad Abdi, Gregg Henry, Henry Czerny and Jason Spisak.
The original “Blade Runner” is directed by Ridley Scott, has Harrison Ford in the lead role and had its cinema premiere in 1982. The film is about the police Deckard, who is commissioned to find a bunch of replicants (or androids) who have rebelled. In 2017, the sequel “Blade Runner 2049” by Denis Villeneuve and Ryan Gosling starred.
Which “Blade Runner” movie do you prefer? What do you think of this animated series?
