Blackmail sextape in Saint-Étienne: Justice prohibits Mediapart from publishing new revelations

An unprecedented decision that aims at freedom of the press.

A Paris court order issued on Friday prohibits Mediapart from publishing new information taken from audio recordings of the mayor of Saint-Etienne. An unprecedented situation in the attack on freedom of the press in France while the mayor of Saint-Etienne takes refuge behind “the attack on private freedom”. The court considers this recording, made by Gilles Artigues in the mayor’s office on November 27, 2017, to be “illegal”. The injunction concerns all “electronic, paper or other” media, the text specifies.

A significant decision that questions whether or not we agree with the methods used by Mediapart journalists. Hiding behind the “private life” argument despite the alleged acts being committed in the context of mayoral duties portends a difficult period for press freedom.
