Black Saturday in France: 1090 kilometers of traffic jam | Inland

On this dreaded Black Saturday, France mainly closes at the back on the Autoroute du Soleil. The most delays were on the A7 between Vienne and Orange. At 11 am, holidaymakers were in a traffic jam for about four hours. It was also very busy on the alternative route through the center of the country.

It is not only very busy on this Black Saturday by holidaymakers, but also by returnees. Furthermore, because of corona, more people prefer to travel by car. Germany is also counting on significant traffic jams, because the summer holidays have started on Friday in a number of states, while it has just ended in other regions. There it was an early connection south of Munich to Salzburg (two hours in a traffic jam). The waiting time at the St. Gotthard tunnel in Switzerland is about an hour all day.

The crowds in Italy on the A22 from the Brenner Pass to Verona were striking. The extra travel time there was more than 3.5 hours around 11.30 am. That is much more than in previous years.

On Friday it was also quite full on the European roads. In France there were more than 1000 kilometers of traffic jams on the highways. The ANWB has the impression that many holidaymakers have already left for the foreign destination on Friday to avoid the worst crowds on Black Saturday. The French traffic service had already advised not to go on the road until Sunday, but not on Saturday. Incidentally, the ANWB also expects crowds on Sunday, especially in Germany due to recurring holiday traffic.
