Cesare Romiti, former chairman of the Fiat automobile group and figure of the Italian establishment, died at the age of 97 on the night of Monday to Tuesday, we learned from corroborating sources.
After having held numerous positions of responsibility within several Italian and foreign banks, this economics graduate joined Fiat in 1976 as Managing Director, where he was the right-hand man of Giovanni Agnelli, to whom he succeeded as President of the group in 1996, recalls the Italian press, which announced his death.
He remained chairman until 1998, before taking over as chairman of media giant RCS Editori, until 2004. In 2005, he was chairman of Impregilo, the main Italian construction group, for one year.
Greeted the president
“Leader of important companies, he brought to Fiat his experience as a man of finance, helping to consolidate his presence in the automotive sector and to diversify his activities”, reacted the Italian President Sergio Mattarella in a message of condolence.
The president of the Fiat Chrysler group John Elkann also hailed in a press release the memory of Cesare Romiti, who “courageously faced difficult times and as such deserved to appear high in the history of Fiat”. “I would also like to express my personal gratitude to Mr. Romiti, who accompanied me during the first years of my professional life”.
