Black Myth: Wukong Breaks Records with 10 Million Sales in Just 3 Days – A New Era for Chinese Gaming

BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) — The popular Chinese video game “Black Myth: Wukong” has taken the gaming world by storm, selling more than 10 million copies across all platforms in just three days after it was released, the developer Game Science announced on Friday night.

Considered the first “Triple-A” game developed by China, “Black Myth: Wukong” topped the “most played games” list on Steam, a major gaming platform, just an hour after his first sale on Tuesday morning.

Game Science revealed that the maximum number of concurrent players in the game across all platforms has exceeded 3 million.

“Black Myth: Wukong” is inspired by the classic Chinese novel “Journey to the West.” The novel follows the adventures of a monk and his three disciples, with a particular focus on Sun Wukong, the legendary Monkey King, known for his supernatural powers and mischievous nature.

Although the majority of players are from China, the popularity of the game is spreading rapidly throughout the world. Some dedicated fans have compiled over 200 pages of supporting material to help international players understand the story’s deep cultural roots.

Celebrated for its rich cultural heritage and the beauty of modern gaming, the game has become a sensation that transcends the gaming community. Its unprecedented success even raised the share prices of some companies and boosted tourism in Shanxi Province, one of the game’s main filming locations.

With the first weekend underway, industry experts are predicting a continued increase in sales of the game.

Goldman Sachs previously predicted that “Black Myth: Wukong” could reach sales of 12 million copies on Steam, generating more than 3 billion yuan ($420 million) in revenue. In an optimistic scenario, the game could reach 20 million units sold, with revenue exceeding 5 billion yuan.
