“Where the fungus goes, the flesh rots,” explains Indian ENT doctor Atul Mittal. The spores of the fungus enter the body through the nose, mouth or eyes. “How does that work? The blood supply to the area decreases. And when the blood supply decreases, it becomes dead flesh.”

People who become infected may experience facial numbness, swelling, or nosebleeds. Some also start to see blurry or lose sight altogether.

Mostly people with a weakened immune system become infected with the fungus. This concerns diabetics, cancer patients and HIV and AIDS patients. But also about corona patients who have been treated with steroids.

Treatment gives greater chance of survival overleving
Without treatment, 80 to 90 percent of people in India who contract a black mold infection will die. According to Indian doctors, some of the infected die before they reach a hospital. Those who do receive treatment have a much higher chance of survival. But 30 to 40 percent of them also die.
