Black ice in Bavaria: Accidents and school closures

While the danger from black ice is easing across much of Germany, many people in the Free State must continue to prepare on Tuesday. There is a warning from the German Weather Service (DWD) (warning level 2) for ice especially for the districts of Northern Bavaria.

According to the DWD, behavior on the road must be appropriate and traffic delays and obstacles must be planned for.

Comprehensive emergency department at the Würzburg University Hospital

The surgical emergency department of the Würzburg University Hospital counted 25 patients in the morning hours until 9 a.m. following black ice accidents. It is currently extremely busy. In addition to hand and forearm injuries, the ER also records hip and femoral neck fractures, some of them severe.

No face-to-face lessons in Bad-Kissingen, Rhön-Grabfeld, Tirschenreuth, Main-Spessart

In some districts, face-to-face classes have been canceled due to the high risk of black ice. According to the current status, this applies to all schools in the district of Main-Spessart, Bad Kissingen and in the district of Rhön-Grabfeld. However, emergency care is available everywhere. Distance learning was offered in the district schools of Rhön-Grabfeld and Bad-Kissingen. Remote lessons were also offered in the Meno-Spessart district.

Schools in the Tirschenreuth district are also closed on Tuesdays. “Distance learning offers” are underway, according to the Tirschenreuth education authority website.

Canceled school buses in Neustadt an der Aisch – Bad Windsheim

In the district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim, school bus lines do not run in some parts of the district. Affected are: Uffenheim and Lipprichhausen as well as Uehlfeld and Steigerwald with Scheinfeld. For interested students there should instead be distance learning.

In the city and district of Würzburg, lessons have also been suspended in some schools, including Waldbüttelbrunn and Höchberg. Since it is not possible to reach school without incident in some places, parents can decide for themselves whether or not to send their children to school, according to the Würzburg state education authority. Emergency assistance always happens, distance learning as much as possible.

The rainy area above Northern Bavaria causes black ice

The reason for the warnings is a new rainy area over northern Bavaria and southern Thuringia, said a DWD meteorologist. Rain moving east could fall on frozen ground in the morning and quickly cause dangerous black ice on roads. Storms cannot be ruled out.

The DWD also warns of ice and freeze (warning level 1) for the rest of the Free State until morning. Increases the risk of slipping. Road behavior should be adequate.
