Black Friday: “The chance you’ll regret it later is huge”

Friday is Black Friday again. Offers have been flying around for a few days now and many people can’t resist the temptation to go to the store or make a deal online. However, it’s best not to, warns Breda budget coach Gerard Heintjes. “Because the chance that you will regret it afterwards is huge.”

A few years ago, Black Friday was only popular in America, but now we can’t ignore the shopping frenzy here anymore. Some people don’t get out of bed because of it, but others fill their entire shopping cart as soon as a discount is sprayed. And therein lies a danger, according to Heintjes.

“If you sleep on it for one night, most wishes come true.”

“On Black Friday, people are tempted to buy something they don’t need or can’t afford,” she explains. “It always looks very nice, but if you sleep on it for one night, most wishes are swept away. We don’t give ourselves that time because it’s now or never. And then you get bad buys.

Heintjes recommends dating only if you’ve had something on your bucket list for at least two months. “Things you really need or have wanted for a long time,” he says. “Make sure you wrote down how much it cost at the time. If it’s really cheaper now, Black Friday can be a lot of fun.

“The clothes will still go on sale.”

But even then you still have to be careful, emphasizes the budget coach. “Clothing goes on sale anyway. If you wait until the end of the season, you regularly come across seventy percent discounts. But with computers and electronics, Black Friday is often good. But of course you really need it.

Meanwhile, there is also a countermovement. More and more companies want to avoid the Black Friday craze to reduce waste. Some therefore take a different approach on Fridays:

  • Dille & Kamille turns it into a “Green Friday”. Employees in Eindhoven, Den Bosch, Breda and Tilburg will volunteer in nature and shops will remain closed.
  • Matrasatelier in Son is also keeping its doors closed. Some of the employees spend the day in the Berkenstaete residential care centre. They want to give the elderly people there a nice day.
  • On Saturday, the Breda Red Cross is organizing a sustainable promotion in which you get a discount on clothing if you hand in two items of clothing.
  • And instead of selling stuff, IKEA encourages the return of used stuff on “Bring Back Friday.” You will then receive up to half of the purchase amount.
