“Black Friday for Future”
Can you turn the consumer frenzy of Black Friday and the activism of Fridays for Future into a successful comedy? French filmmakers Éric Toledano and Olivier Nakache show how it’s done. All they need is a few good gags, two great main actors and a pinch of political incorrectness.
Albert (Pio Marmaï) and Bruno (Jonathan Cohen) are compulsive occasional buyers who don’t want to avoid installment loans. But that has consequences. Over-indebted and always on the run from their creditors, the two live between petty scams and a personal life that is constantly on the brink.

It was during a protest against Black Friday that the two men found themselves in the orbit of climate activists. Actually, they just want to grab a free beer and a few free chips, but before they know it, Albert and Bruno are suddenly part of the movement themselves and are carrying furniture donated to “Fridays for Future” through Paris.

A free beer with consequences
Even though they still primarily have their own interests in mind, the two men are warmly welcomed into the circle of climate protectors. This is mainly thanks to star activist Cactus (Noémie Merlant), who both Albert and Bruno have their eye on. However, they are denied a rendezvous because unfortunately Cactus has sworn to absolute chastity. Until the last polar bear is saved, physical love is taboo for them.

Éric Toledano and Olivier Nakache, the film’s authors and directors, are considered guarantors of tragicomic social dramas with heart and humor. They have also been known in Germany since their surprise hit “Pretty Best Friends” in 2012. Here, however, in their latest film together, they lack the lightness and elegance of their previous successes. Instead of limiting themselves to the story of the two failed existences, Toledano and Nakache invent a huge number of secondary characters and side stories that rarely fit into the action and ultimately lengthen the film unnecessarily.

A ton of supporting characters
The fact that “Black Friday for Future” is still a success in the end is mainly thanks to the two main actors, who use their charm and comedic talent to turn even the most absurd script idea into a successful gag. At least if you like French comedies with original dialogues and can sometimes laugh at activists.
So: go to the cinema, shake off the old year and leave the consumer frenzy of the festival of love behind you!
