Black Friday avoids food – News

“If the chains have any discounts on Black Friday, they are mostly consumer goods,” confirmed Monika Kopčilová, a product specialist from the comparison site Kupi.cz, to Novinkám.

According to their analysis, in addition to consumer goods, only the Lidl chain offers Black Friday discounts on food as well. This is, for example, butter, toasted bread, sweets or wine, in the amount of 30 or 40 percent.

“However, these are conditional on the activation of the coupon in the loyalty application and a purchase over 300 crowns, while each coupon is valid for just one day,” added Kopčilová. Butter, for example, costs 27.90 crowns after the discount.

Black Friday for the first time under new rules. What’s changing about the discount frenzy?

“The rotation of discounts and promotions for food is different than for non-food goods and electronics. While non-food items have their own Black Friday, Albert offers a flyer with hundreds of items at discounted prices every week for groceries,” Albert’s spokesman Jiří Mareček said when asked.

Other chains also offer discounts on selected foods in classic weekly flyers, but they have not yet decided to include foods in the special Black Friday event.

This may be related to the fact that retail sales have been falling more sharply in recent months for surplus goods such as electronics and clothing, and retailers are trying to break this trend before Christmas.

Sales of basic foods are essentially more stable, even though most customers try to purchase as much as possible during regular discount events.

At the same time, in the last two years, food was among the items in the consumer basket that rose in price the most.

The Billa department store has a special Black Week flyer where it offers discounts of up to 71 percent. These mainly concern toys and electronics.

Kaufland, Tesco and Globus, as well as Billa, offer Black Friday discounts only on consumer goods, such as clothes, tools and the like. Makro also has discounts on consumer goods, namely 40 percent on all toys.

“Black Friday discounts of 15 to 40 percent in Globus hypermarkets apply to non-food items, namely popular electrical appliances, electrical engineering, and drugstores,” chain spokeswoman Aneta Turnovská said.

In the flyer, Globus offers discounts of 30 percent not only on fashion, but also on selected sports nutrition products, which of course is not exactly a typical food item.

In addition to baby diapers, the online food retailer Košík also offers baby food and snacks in Black Friday discounts, but otherwise only consumer goods and pet supplies.

Mandatory by law

By law, sellers are required to state the discount rate compared to the lowest price of the given product in the last 30 days, including the past price. Although this does not apply to fresh food, it does apply to long-lasting ones. It is checked by the Czech Trade Inspection.

But not all sellers respect the rules. Experts advise making a list of priorities for your purchases, comparing the final prices of several stores and, in addition to rating stars, actually reading a few reviews.
