Black ex-cop Eric Adams has won the Democratic primary to run for mayor of New York. In the preliminary result, he can no longer be overtaken by his opponents.
With the Democratic nomination in his pocket, Adams, currently chairman of the Brooklyn district, will probably no longer miss the mayoralty. Although he still has to face his Republican opponent Curtis Sliwa in November, registered Democratic voters are by far in the majority in the American city.
Still, 60-year-old Adams remained cautious in his victory speech: “We must now focus on winning in November so that we can achieve a safe, fair and affordable future for all New Yorkers.”
Safety
In his election campaign, the former policeman campaigned for more safety on the streets. New York is experiencing an increasing number of shootings. In addition, Adams will have to lead the city out of the corona crisis. Other problems include high financial inequality, a dysfunctional school system and a lack of affordable housing.
The new mayor succeeds Democrat Bill de Blasio. He could no longer stand for election after two terms. If Adams does win in November, he will become New York’s second black mayor. The first was Democrat David Dinkins, who was in charge of the city from 1990 to 1993.
