On Sunday, September 10, Match TV viewers in the morning program will see the UFC 293 tournament, which will be held in Sydney, Australia. For Russian fans of mixed martial arts, the main event of the card will surely be the duel of Alexander Volkov, who will have to fight with local heavyweight Tai Tuivasa.
If Drago intends to return to the number of real contenders for the championship belt, then it is desirable for him not only to win, but to effectively destroy the opponent. However, Alexander is very good at it.
“It’s important to beat the assholes”
At the end of 2014, Russian fighter Alexander Volkov had not yet made his debut in the UFC, but he had already managed to make some noise across the ocean. Drago became the Bellator champion, and after losing the belt, he managed to win the heavyweight Grand Prix. True, the heavyweight did not plan to settle in the USA and, at the first opportunity, he was ready to fight in Russia in front of his fans.
“Honestly, I’m not drawn to it even to prepare for battles. During the Bellator Grand Prix, I was abroad for three months. After the first month, I really want to go home. It seems that all the conditions are there, but there are some other relations between people. In the West, they communicate with you if something is needed from a person, – Alexander told Sportbox.

On December 12, 2014, Volkov had the opportunity to once again please Russian fans. In St. Petersburg at the “Sibur Arena” at the Tech-KREP FC “Battle of Heroes” tournament, he had to meet with the American Roy Bouton, known by the nickname “Black Dynamite”. The opponent with a record of 10-4 was already a little familiar to our public – a few months earlier in Simferopol, he lost a decision to Denis Goltsov. Alexander looked like a clear favorite against the background of the US representative, but before the fight he assessed his chances rather cautiously.
– I will not say that Boughton is a passing opponent. For me, this fight is a kind of test, – Alexander said on the eve of the fight.
Black Dynamite spoke more self-confidently, and even from the absence of obvious weaknesses in his opponent, he made an unexpected conclusion.
– Volkov has no flaws, he is a universal athlete. This is its main drawback. He will strive to win beautifully. But I prepared a surprise for him, which he does not even suspect. Let him wait for our fight just as I wait for him, because in the ring in front of him there will be another Black Dynamite. It’s impossible to win all the fights, it’s important to do your job perfectly and beat the assholes, achieving the maximum result, ”Sportbox quoted the American as saying.
“Tune in for the worst”
The American failed to realize his ambitious plans in battle. Already in the first seconds, Volkov attacked him with a low-kick. The American could hardly stay on his feet and even tried to answer, although not so spectacularly. And then he tried, apparently, to present the promised surprise, trying to get to his feet. It was not possible to discourage Drago – he may not have been a master of wrestling at that moment, but still managed to avoid a takedown.
For Black Dynamite, the troubles did not end, in a matter of seconds he was on the floor. Volkov, not too technically, literally due to brute force, managed to transfer his opponent, and then began to beat. The hall supported this undertaking, and the American fussily tried to get out. He failed to succeed, he never got to his feet. Drago, however, continued with renewed vigor to rest the guest from across the ocean with strong blows. Most of them reached the goal, and the referee had to save the guest from overseas already 40 seconds after the start of the meeting. The black dynamite looked like a limp doll.
— I, of course, tuned in to the worst option. In my fights, I never count on a quick knockout. But I strive for it. When I felt that I could finish, I just did it, and it turned out that I knocked out Boughton ahead of schedule, in the first round. In general, I can say that there were no tactics as such, there were various options for the fight. What are your plans for 2015? First of all, this, of course, is to return the Bellator belt back, ”Volkov said after the victory.
After that, Volkov was able to pick up the championship belt, however, not in Bellator, but in M-1. And then he burst into the UFC, where he still can’t get to his cherished goal. There is hope that after the next fight, Drago will be closer to his dream.
