Tonight, the Black Achievement Awards awarded: annual prizes for black role models who have made a major contribution to Dutch society. This year there was extra attention for people in healthcare.

The awards were presented for the fifth time, at the end of the Black Achievement Month which took place last October. That month was all about the theme this year Heroes, where extra attention was paid to the deployment of black people in the corona crisis.

The prize was established in 2016 by NiNsee, the National Institute of Dutch Slavery Past and Heritage. According to Black Achievement Awards project leader John Leerdam, the initiative is at least as important as in the first year.
‘We ensure that people of Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Surinamese and African descent are put in the spotlight. As organizers, we also look at what’s going on. That is why we now choose people from the care sector who have received little attention. Especially nowadays. ‘

From Black Achievement Awards can be followed tonight from 7.30 pm on AT5 and AT5.nl. The music is provided by the HAYP band led by Alwin Lewis. There are also musical contributions from Glen Faria and Berget Lewis.
