The Los Angeles trial lasted nearly two weeks before attorneys for both sides concluded their closing arguments and the case was presented to the jury at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
And at noon on Monday, when Judge Gregory Alarcon called for a lunch break, the 12 men and women on the panel had still not emerged from the jury room with a verdict.
Under California law, civil trials require at least nine jurors to vote in favor of a verdict. If nine or more cannot agree, the judge can declare a mistrial.
This would essentially mean that neither side would have won – and a new trial, with a new jury, could be called, in which the case would be tried again.
