The BKR has not investigated what could be the cause of the decline. It is clear that in the corona year 2020 fewer people took out consumer credit, such as a bank loan, a telephone subscription with which you also finance your smartphone above 250 euros or an installment purchase. At the end of 2020, almost 8.8 million people in the Netherlands had approximately 10.6 million such consumer loans. A year earlier, this involved almost 9.4 million people and 11.5 million loans.
Fewer payment problems
The fact that there were fewer payment problems may be due to the fact that the Dutch are hoarding money due to lockdowns that they would have spent without catering and shop closures. That extra savings can be used to pay off debt.
The BKR also sees that people who have previously had problems with debts now run into financial difficulties again more often. In 2020, 18.7 percent of all people who had solved their debt problems again had payment problems within six months. This year it is 19.3 percent.
