Rajya Sabha election: The BJP has won Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh in massive cross-voting in the 15 Rajya Sabha elections in three states. Meanwhile, Congress claimed to have won majority of seats in Karnataka. Congress won three Rajya Sabha seats in Karnataka with Ajay Maken, Nasser Hussain and GC Chandrasekhar winning. On the other hand BJP candidate Narayansa Bhandage won one seat. The fifth candidate JD(S) leader D Kupendra Reddy lost by 36 votes.
BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan has won the lone Rajya Sabha seat in Himachal Pradesh defeating the ruling Congress candidate Abhishek Manu Singhvi. Interestingly, the BJP won by drawing lots after tying with the Congress by 34 votes. In Uttar Pradesh, where polling was held for 10 seats, the BJP won all eight of the contested seats. On the other hand, the Samajwadi Party won two out of three contested seats. Samajwadi Party MLAs Rakesh Pandey, Abhay Singh, Rakesh Pratap Singh, Manoj Pandey, Vinod Chaturvedi, Pooja Pal and Ashutosh Maurya may have voted in favor of the NDA, sources said.
Of the 56 Rajya Sabha seats that went to polls on Tuesday, 41 members have effectively secured their seats in the Upper House. Actress and MP Jaya Bachchan and Dalit leader Ramji Lal Suman were elected to the Upper House from the Samajwadi Party. Jaya Bachchan got the highest number of votes with 41 members voting in her favour. In Karnataka Rajya Sabha counting, Congress won three seats while BJP’s Narayansa Bhandage bagged one seat. Karnataka may witness cross-voting of two MLAs. BJP’s ST Somasekhar and independent MLA G Janardhana Reddy are reported to have voted in favor of the Congress candidate.
