The death of former Indian prime Minister Manmohan Singh has ignited a bitter political feud between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition congress party. The controversy centers around the location of Singh’s funeral and the subsequent accusations of disrespect and political maneuvering.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, a vocal critic of the current goverment, publicly condemned the decision to hold Singh’s cremation at Nigambodh Ghat, a public cremation ground in New Delhi. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Gandhi stated, “The great son of India and the first Prime Minister of the Sikh community, Dr. Manmohan Singh ji has been totally insulted by the present government by performing his last rites today at the Nigambodh Ghat.”
Gandhi argued that Singh, who served as Prime Minister for a decade, deserved a more prominent and respectful final resting place, suggesting that past Prime Ministers’ funerals were handled differently. He added, “To date, respecting the dignity of all former Prime Ministers, their last rites were performed at authorized burial sites so that every person could have the last darshan and pay homage without any inconvenience. Dr Manmohan Singh deserves our highest respect and a memorial. The government shoudl have shown respect to this great son of the country and his proud community.”
The BJP swiftly responded to Gandhi’s criticism. BJP MP Sambit Patra accused the Congress party of “politicizing” singh’s death. Patra stated, “The kind of deceptive politics Congress has engaged in, especially Rahul Gandhi, is unfortunate. Just an hour ago, Rahul Gandhi tweeted accusing the BJP of disrespecting former PM Manmohan Singh by conducting his last rites at Nigam Bodh Ghat. On a day of mourning, I believe Congress should have refrained from this kind of politics.”

The controversy extends beyond the immediate funeral arrangements. The Congress party had previously called for Singh’s funeral to be held at a location suitable for the construction of a memorial. While the government pledged to allocate land for a memorial in the coming days, the Congress viewed the initial decision as a “deliberate insult to the first Sikh Prime Minister of India.” Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge even wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging a change of location for the cremation.
Patra countered these claims, asserting that the government had acted swiftly to plan a fitting memorial. He explained, “We assured Dr Singh’s family and Congress to go ahead with the funeral and last rites process by the time the government allocates the land and other necessary procedures. The Congress party engaged in politics on this matter as well.”
the ongoing dispute highlights the deep political divisions within India and underscores the sensitive nature of handling the legacies of prominent figures. The debate over the appropriate location for Singh’s final resting place and the accusations of political opportunism are likely to continue to dominate headlines in the coming days.

Senior Editor: Dr. Verma, thank you for joining us today. The passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has understandably sparked a national outpouring of grief, but it has also unluckily become entangled in partisan politics. Can you shed some light on the situation?
Dr. Ajay Verma: Certainly. The controversy stems primarily from the decision to hold Dr.Singh’s cremation at Nigambodh ghat, a public crematorium in new Delhi.
Senior Editor: The Congress party, which Dr. Singh represented, has been especially vocal in its criticism of this choice, arguing that it lacks the dignity befitting a former Prime Minister.

They view the decision as a deliberate slight, questioning whether the government truly respects Dr. singh’s legacy. This has, in turn, escalated into accusations of political opportunism from the BJP.
Senior Editor: How has the BJP responded to these accusations?
dr.Ajay Verma: The BJP has defended its choice, asserting that it acted swiftly and respectfully in planning Dr. Singh’s funeral arrangements during a time of national mourning.
