BJP defeated in farmers’ strike; Haryana local body polls suffer setback National | Deshabhimani

New Delhi: The BJP has suffered a setback in the local body elections in Haryana after farmers intensified their agitation against agricultural laws. The BJP-JVP alliance lost key corporations Ambala and Sonipat in the elections a year after coming to power. The BJP is facing elections in Haryana with its head and waist tied to prove that the farmers’ strike has not affected voters.

The BJP, the party of Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala, also suffered a major setback. The party collapsed in their strongholds of Hisar, Ulakana, Rewari and Dharuhera. Elections to Ambala, Panchgula, Sonipat, Rewari, Dharuhera, Sampala, Hisar and Ulakana were held on Sunday. The Congress won the Sonipat mayoral election with a majority of 14,000 votes. Sonipat is located close to Singh, where the farmers’ struggle is taking place.

The party claimed that the victory of the Congress was due to public sentiment against the agricultural laws. In Ambala, the Haryana Javasechana Party won the mayoral election by 8000 votes. Shakti Rani Sharma, wife of party leader Vinod Sharma, won.
