Qiu can be seen leaning his body on the display table, and his right hand is holding a cellphone. After observing the phone for a while, Qiu then bit the anti-theft cable connected to the phone several times.
The store manager said Qiu’s actions had triggered an alarm while the theft was still in progress. However, employees who investigated said they did not see anything strange.
According to police officer Zhang Jinhong, Qiu tried to cover up his actions by acting cautiously. If someone else passes by or approaches, he pretends to scroll through the cellphone screen like an ordinary buyer.
After successfully disconnecting the security cable, Qiu immediately entered iPhone 14 Plus stole into the bag and left the store. Not long after Qiu left, the shop staff saw the broken security cable and missing cell phone and called the police.
The CCTV footage managed to reveal what happened and the police immediately arrested Qiu in front of his house just 30 minutes after he carried out the act. He is still being detained awaiting further investigation, as quoted from the South China Morning Post, Monday (4/9/2023).
Qiu admitted to the police that he actually intended to buy a new cellphone at the shop to replace his lost cellphone. But after being shocked to see the price iPhone 14 Plus which reached 7,000 Yuan or around Rp. 14 million, he decided to steal the demo unit.
Stealing a cellphone by biting the security cable until it breaks does have a big risk. Apart from breaking the law, most anti-theft cables are also reinforced with metal wires which can certainly harm your teeth.
