Bizarre own goal! Augsburg’s double strike shocks Wolves
Successful home debut for Jess Thorup: FC Augsburg also won its second game under the new coach and moved further away from the danger zone. Against VfL Wolfsburg, FCA won 3-2 (1-2) after falling behind and moved within one point of Lower Saxony.
Phillip Tietz (17′) had put Augsburg in the lead, but Wolfsburg countered before the break with Jonas Wind (35′) and Lovro Majer (45′, penalty kick).
The hosts rewarded themselves for a strong final phase with a curious own goal from Sebastiaan Bornauw (79th) and Arne Engels (82nd) - and saved the victory when they were outnumbered: Felix Uduokhai (87th) saw yellow-red for repeated foul play.
Kovac with four changes at VfL Wolfsburg
Thorup decided not to make any personnel changes after the 5-2 win on his successful debut in Heidenheim.
Wolfsburg’s Niko Kovac, on the other hand, tried four new players compared to the most recent defeat against Leverkusen: Among other things, goal scorer Majer started, regular goalkeeper Koen Casteels was missing again and was replaced by Pavao Pervan.
After an uneventful opening quarter of an hour, Augsburg took the first chance to take the lead. The moved-up central defender Jeffrey Gouweleeuw crossed the ball into the center to Tietz, who reacted quicker than opponent Maxence Lacroix and scored.
Wolfsburg equalizes with Augsburg’s help
Even with the lead behind them, the FCA continued to have space and opportunities – but in the crucial moments the hosts were too imprecise and therefore too harmless. Wolfsburg stayed in the game despite initially mediocre performance and then equalized with Augsburg’s help.
Niklas Dorsch unfortunately cleared the ball to Wind – and the Dane, who played under coach Thorup during his time at FC Copenhagen, didn’t miss the invitation.
The hit had an impact. Suddenly Augsburg was less present in the duels and VfL gained an advantage. Shortly after Patrick Wimmer missed the lead with a shot that hit the crossbar (43′), Majer scored from the penalty spot to take the lead. Dorsch had previously fouled Mattias Svanberg.

A curious own goal gives Augsburg an equalizer
Even after the break, the game remained competitive and rarely high-class. Augsburg struggled, but kept getting stuck. Wolfsburg trusted its defense and waited for a counterattack.
Thorup finally tried to provide new impetus with fresh forces. Ermedin Demirovic (69′) missed the 2-2, a goal from Tietz (71′) didn’t count because of offside, but FCA didn’t let that unsettle them.
To make it 2-2, Arne Engels hit a ball from the right from deep in midfield towards the penalty area and Wolfsburg’s Bornauuw, without any pressure from the opposition, hit the ball into his own box with his right when attempting to clear.
Engels completed Augsburg’s turnaround with a header.
