Bizarre incident in Wijnegem: Woman drives BMW onto narrow bike bridge over lock gates

Wijnegem –

The fact that the temporary bicycle bridge high over the lock complex in Wijnegem was firmly put together by De Vlaamse Waterweg was previously demonstrated by the Cyclists’ Union. But now the last remaining doubt about the sturdiness of the construction, which at first glance seems somewhat rickety, has also been experimentally proven after a bizarre crossing by a lady in a BMW.

Apparently a woman still did not know that the banana bridge has been demolished. Coming from Schilde, she maneuvered her BMW over the towpath and then rode onto the bridge intended only for two-wheelers and pedestrians in the wheels of several cyclists.

That initially went wonderfully well. However, the ride with the allure of an amusement park attraction ended at the top of the lock gates. The tubes there are only just wide enough to allow cyclists and pedestrians to pass through. The lady’s BMW was immediately stuck.

“She couldn’t go anywhere anymore,” said Liliane Stinissen of De Vlaamse Waterweg. “Our dike guards rushed to the confused lady and guided her back down. The return journey could only be started by very carefully rolling backwards. Our bicycle bridge is of course much too narrow to turn around.”

The Vlaamse Waterweg checks whether the unusual passer-by has not caused any damage to the bicycle bridge. The bridge was once again declared safe for its regular users. The driver in question escaped unscathed. It is not yet clear whether a fine will follow. The local police would not have been on the scene. The incident led to surprise and ridicule from local residents and cyclists in the area.
